New Diamond Jewellery – Do Not Forget The 4Cs.
When purchasing any item of diamond jewellery, such as a new diamond ring, it is very important that you consider the 4Cs as these four factors are used to determine value in a diamond.
The 4Cs are Clarity, Carat, Colour, and Cut.
- Clarity.
A diamond’s clarity is graded from I3 to FL. If a diamond receives the FL grading it is considered flawless, however a diamond that is graded I3 contains the highest level of flaws.
In order to identify which grade a diamond belongs to, the diamond is examined under magnification for flaws; including both flaws which exist on the outside of the diamond and on the inside of the diamond. If a flaw is located on the outside of the diamond, it is called a blemish, however if a flaw is located on the inside of a diamond, it is known as an inclusion.
In order to be considered flawless and receive the FL grade, a diamond must have no visible inclusions or blemishes when examined at 10x magnification.
- Carat.
The higher the carat; the more valuable the diamond. This is because a carat is a measurement of weight for a diamond.
- Colour.
Whilst diamonds are available in numerous different colours such as blue, pink, brown, and red, diamonds which are colourless are graded from D to Z. The most valuable grade is D; however Z is the least valuable grade.
- Cut.
There are numerous different diamond cuts to choose from. One such example is the brilliant style. A brilliant diamond cut is cut in order to provide both a high level of fire and brilliance.
Fire refers to the sparkle you see when light is broken down by the diamond, producing a ‘rainbow’ of colours; however brilliance refers to the colourless light which reflects back out from the diamond.
