Diamond Fancy Rings, A Show–Stopping Collection From Mallard Jewellers

What Is A Fancy Ring?

A fancy ring is a ring which has a shape that differs from the norm such as a D shape ring or a court shape ring. This can take many different forms which means that fancy rings can be very extravagant show-stopping jewellery items, great for making a statement on a special occasion. For example, you could choose a twist band or an X ring.

What Is A Fancy Colour Diamond?

A colourless diamond is a clear or transparent diamond. On the other hand a diamond is often called a fancy colour diamond if it is a coloured diamond. Some more popular styles of fancy colours include red, pink, and in extremely rare cases – blue.

Did you know that until the 1980s it was widely considered that brown diamonds were only useful for use in industrial use? However, after they were marketed as ‘champagne coloured diamonds’ a variety of medium-priced fancy diamond jewellery designs features brown coloured fancy diamonds.

What Is A Fancy Cut Diamond?

If a piece includes a fancy cut diamond, the stone will be cut in a style that is different from the norm; which in this case is a round brilliant cut. This diamond cut was created in 1919 by Marcel Tolkowsky, however whilst it is the norm, numerous other styles throughout history have risen to popularity; making second hand collections the ideal place to shop for fans of vintage jewellery.

For example, the princess cut by Henry Grossbard. Fun fact – this was one of the first patents on a diamond shape, however, in 1977 this shape was known as the Quadrillion. Alternatively, you could opt for a piece with a diamond cut in the style of the Asscher cut; created in 1902 by Joseph Asscher in Holland.

Why Choose Second Hand?

Fashion changes with time, as such those interested in vintage jewellery and pieces in the styles of yesteryear could find a potential treasure trove of luxurious items in a second hand collection of diamond jewellery.

So if you’re searching for that eye-catching piece for a special occasion, or if you want to find a beautiful gift to show that special someone how much you care – choose an item with history and style – choose pre owned diamond jewellery.

Don’t Forget About The 4 Cs

When people purchase diamonds they often talk about the 4Cs which are clarity, colour, cut, and carat. These areas of appraisal for a diamond are not limited to solitaire rings with round brilliant diamonds. They also include fancy rings, both in terms of diamond fancy rings, and rings with fancy diamonds.

So, when purchasing or browsing through items of diamond jewellery, remember to consider the 4 Cs.

  • Clarity
A diamond’s clarity is a measurement regarding the level of flaws that exist either inside or outside a diamond (if any). A diamond is considered flawless and receives a clarity grading of FL if the diamond has no visible inclusions or blemishes when examined at 10x magnification.

With regards to flaws located on or inside a diamond. An inclusion is a flaw which is located on the inside of a diamond, whereas a blemish is a flaw which is located on the outside of a diamond. The FL grading is reserved for diamonds which have no visible flaws; however a diamond with an I3 grade contains the highest level of flaws.
  • Colour
With regards to diamonds and their colour grading, it’s important to consider if the diamond is colourless or a fancy colour diamond. For example, colourless diamonds are graded from D to Z, with the most valuable grade being D and the least valuable grade being Z.

However, fancy colour diamonds are graded differently, they are graded as follows. Fancy light, fancy, fancy intense, fancy vivid. The range grades fancy colour diamonds on their strength and intensity of their colour, the rarest grade of fancy colour diamond is the fancy vivid grade.
  • Cut
There are numerous different diamond cuts to choose from. One such example is the brilliant style. However, with regards to fancy cut diamonds, as discussed above this refers to a diamond which is cut into a style outside the norm. As such, this includes princess cut rings which provide a luxurious rectangular shape whilst still maintaining much of the fire and sparkle associated with more traditional diamond cuts such as the round cut. However, the princess cut is not the only fancy diamond cut that is available; the fancy cut also includes extravagant cuts such as marquise cut, cushion cut, and oval cut.

  • Carat
A metric carat is 200 milligrams. A diamond carat can be divided into 100 points, allowing for precise measurements to the hundredth decimal place when measuring the weight of a diamond.

As the carat is a measurement of weight for a diamond, the higher the carat; the more valuable the diamond.
